Internships

Applying classroom knowledge in the work setting helps students both determine their strengths and abilities and discover their career paths.  Some academic programs at NU require internships or practicums as part of the curriculum.  Other internships are secured directly by students.

The following academic programs include an internship or practicum component:

  • Chicago Field Studies (CFS) – Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in any NU School or Major
    • CFS is an experiential-learning program that helps students think deeply about work—in a particular field and in general—while gaining valuable, supported experience as an intern with an organization of their choice.  Students will intern (10-40 hours a week) while participating in a weekly CFS seminar course that incorporates readings, discussions, case studies, guest lectures and presentations to enhance student’s learning and internship experience.

A student will apply to the CFS Program 3-6 months prior to the desired quarterly, and works with the advising team to help them research, identify and interview for internships that interest them.  CFS offers career advising resources (resume, practice interviews) and hundreds of internship opportunities for those that need CFS assistance. Students who apply to CFS with internships in hand also receive advising services and support throughout the quarter.

A student will enroll in a CFS course for 1, 2, 3, or 4 credits while interning 10-40 hours a week. Course credits correspond to internship hours and coursework. CFS course options such as Business, Modern Workplace, Environment, Health/Medicine, Social Justice or Legal Field Studies entail weekly class meetings, readings, assignments, discussion and more to get students exploring trends and examining issues in their workplaces and beyond.

Students advance both their academic and professional goals through CFS.
